Quick Resume:  Artistic Director, William Swain joined Opera Illinois September 15, 2000 in the position of General Manager. He oversees all aspects of production and company management, including artistic administration and systems maintenance. This season he directed Puccini's double bill of "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi" in February and Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte" in April. He has also directed "The Ballad of Baby Doe" by Douglas Moore, Mozart’s "The Magic Flute" and "Don Giovanni", Bizet’s "Carmen", and Humperdinck’s "Hansel and Gretel" for Opera Illinois. Originally a theater major at SUNY Oneonta, NY, where he developed both onstage and backstage skills, William transferred to the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, NY, and switched his major to voice and opera. While enrolled at Crane he worked as the Technical Director for the Crane Opera Theater. As a baritone, he has sung with many regional companies, such as Tri-Cities Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Syracuse Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Lake George Opera, New England Opera, Opera San Jose and Opera Illinois. William has been Guest Director at City University of New York’s Brooklyn College Conservatory, directing productions of "The Magic Flute", "Don Giovanni", Stravinsky's "A Rake's Progress", and Richard Strauss’ "Ariadne auf Naxos". He has directed opera, operetta and musicals for professional regional and summer stock companies, including such works as "Hansel and Gretel" for Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, "The Marriage of Figaro", "La Boheme", Bernstein’s "Candide", "The Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan, and many musicals from Rogers & Hammerstein to Sondheim.
